NDIS Participants
Types of camps • Camps for kids with a specific need. For example, improve social skills • Camps for kids with many different kinds of special needs • Inclusionary camps – where we invite a neurotypical teenager to model positive behavior.
Camp Leaders
Ben and Thea are registered Special School Teachers during the school term teaching an academic curriculum. We are also heavily involved in promoting sports, recreation and Arts activities, alongside the curriculum. Our weekend camps are a combination of safe, adventurous recreational activities that allow the participants to explore the world outside of the home and school environments.
Social Benefits of Camps - The benefits of camp for kids with special needs are often the same as for any child: • increased confidence and independence • activity and exercise • the opportunity to interact with other kids, develop friendships, and build relationships • positive role modeling by adults • a chance for parents to have a much-needed break
Physical Benefits of Camps Many kids with disabilities are sedentary and don't get to participate in the sports or recreational activities that their peers do. They therefore miss out on the social and health benefits that exercise brings. These give immediate health benefits (such as improved cardiovascular fitness) and recreational options that can carry over into adult life. Many camps combine learning environments with these physical activities, giving kids with behavioral or learning problems the chance to develop, or catch up on, needed skills whilst having a great time!
Is your child ready for camp?If it turns out that the idea of camp is a bit overwhelming for both you and your child, you might want to try starting an overnight session at our special-needs camp. During the camp, we monitor each child closely to assess their sensitivity to the situation. For example, is it too loud, is it too crowded? We tend to alternate between an active activity followed by a passive activity. For example, attending a theme park followed by popcorn and an in-room movie. We have sensory equipment on hand (noise cancelling headphones, stress toys) in case of need and we encourage our participants to bring any sensory needs that can assist them to remain at a calm state.
NDIS Funding Whilst we are not a registered NDIS provider, NDIS participants can contract our services as part of their funding plan.
